Imperial Navy vs. Chaos (BFG)

It has been a long time since we last played a game of Battlefleet Gothic. But today, we finally managed to get a game in again—specifically, a game of BFG. Unfortunately, we only took a few photos during the entire game. The following two fleets faced off against each other:

Imperial Navy (Total 510 points)

  • Dictator Class Cruiser (Ship Name: Talon of Sicae) 220 points
  • Lunar Class Cruiser (Ship Name: Ironblade) 180 points
  • Dauntless Class Light Cruiser (Ship Name: Lord Hadraner) 110 points

Chaos (Total 505 points)

  • Devastation Class Cruiser (Ship Name: Bearers of Destruction) with Chaos Space Marine Crew 190+35 points
  • Inferno Class Cruiser (Ship Name: Deathfall) 180 points
  • 3x Iconoclast Class Destroyer (Squadron Name: Crimson Band) 90 points

For the scenario, we took inspiration from Cruiser Clash. However, since we only had a 36x36-inch play area, we deployed the fleets in diagonally opposite starting zones so they wouldn't be heading straight into each other right from the start. For celestial phenomena, we included a gas and dust cloud as well as a few asteroid fields. Due to the small number of ships overall, both fleets were kept very close together at the start. Only the Chaos escorts held back slightly, using the asteroid fields for cover. The shots fired during the first two rounds barely scratched the shields; only the light cruiser lost two hull points. However, that was the only damage the ship sustained throughout the game. The Dictator class cruiser and Devastation class cruisers engaged in dogfights with Furies and Dreadclaws, though these largely cancelled each other out during the opening rounds. However, the Lunar class cruiser ended up somewhat separated from the rest of the fleet after Dreadclaws inflicted two critical hits on its weapons. The two Chaos cruisers were able to capitalize on this situation, having sustained no damage from direct fire or torpedoes thanks to lucky dice rolls.

Battlefield at the end of Round 3

In the third round, the Lunar-class cruiser lost four hull points due to multiple fires on board caused by the Dreadclaws. Furthermore, the cruiser failed to escape after a failed morale check. In the fourth round, it was destroyed by weapon battery fire and incinerated in a plasma drive overload, causing minor damage to the two Chaos cruisers in the process. Meanwhile, in the center of the battlefield, the squadron of Iconoclast class destroyers attempted to attack the Dauntless light cruiser, but failed to inflict any damage. In return, however, they sustained significant damage. They managed to mitigate this through several lucky Brace for Impact rolls, resulting in the destruction of only one destroyer.

Round 3: The two Chaos cruisers are closing in on the Lunar class cruiser

Round 4: Plasma Drive Overload
The rest of the game is quickly told: the Iconoclast class destroyers tried to avoid further damage by hiding behind the asteroid fields. The remaining ships of both fleets were so far apart that direct attacks were virtually impossible, leading the two surviving Imperial ships to disengage in the sixth round. In terms of victory points, the game ended 213 to 0 in favor of Chaos—partly because the Chaos gods received a great deal of help from the dice gods during the match, especially on Brace for Impact rolls.

Imperial and Chaos Ships (BFG)

Over the past few months, whenever time allowed, I painted a few spaceships for BFG. The ships received matching bases for their respective factions. So far I have painted one Devastation Class Cruiser and three Iconoclast Class Destroyers for Chaos, and one Lunar Class Cruiser for the Imperial Navy. As a new addition to the single cruiser of the Imperial Navy, I have now painted a Dauntless Class Light Cruiser.

I used the following colors for the Dauntless Class Light Cruiser:
  • Black
  • White
  • Warp Lighning (Green)
  • Boltgun Metal (Silver)
  • Ultramarine Blue (Blue)
  • Nulen Oil (Black Ink)
  • Retributor Armour (Gold)
  • Magmadroth Flame (Red)

Hobgolbin for the Chaos Dwarfs/Havoc Dwarfs

The finished allied Hobgoblins for the Chaos Dwarves for Fantasy Skirmish. A squad of three wolf riders with short bows and a Hobgoblin Leader on a wolf.

I painted the models over a year ago, but never got around to taking some photos.

Chaos Dwarfs/Havoc Dwarfs - part 2

The complete Chaos Dwarf part of the gang is now painted.
I also made decals so I could complete the missing shields on the Chaos Dwarf Warriors.

Chaos Dwarfs/Havoc Dwarfs

I painted part of the Chaos Dwarf Skirmish Army.
1 Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer and 3 Chaos Dwarf Blunderbusses are complete.

The 3 Chaos Dwarf Warriors with hand weapons are also finished except for the shields, because I'm still looking for decals for these.

I used the following colors to paint the miniatures:

New year, new army? [OPR, Havoc Dwarfs]

New year, new army? Probably not..., in the last two years the real life has taken up most of the time, leaving very little time for the hobby. But a few new models would be a good start to start some time with the hobby again.

I would like to play more regularly again, but most of the rule systems are so extensive that the games always take up a lot of time, which I unfortunately don't have. When I was looking for rules for faster games I came across the rules of onepagerules - Age of Fantasy: Skirmish which I would like to test.

Since I wanted a few suitable models for this, the Chaos Dwarfs that I had printed in 3D for testing a few years ago came back to my mind.
Unfortunately, these were slightly out of scale in size. But since I found these models in a box, they were a good starting point. So I started the 3d printer again, which I hadn't used for a long time, to print some Chaos Dwarfs this time, which matched the good old models from the 90s in terms of their appearance and size.

So, after a few trial and error attempts, I had a small pile of models from which I could make an army for onepagerules - Age of Fantasy: Skirmish.

I wanted a small band of chaos dwarves supported by some hobgoblins. That's how I came up with the list below.

Chaos Dwarfs skirmish army - primed

++ Havoc Dwarves [300pts] ++

Goblin Leader [1] Q5+ D5+ | 40pts | Hero, Tough(3), 1x Wolf(Fast, Impact(1))
Cave-Beast Companion (A2, Rending), Hand Weapon (A3), Heavy Bites (A1, AP(1))

Abyssal Leader [1] Q4+ D5+ | 45pts | Hero, Slow, Tough(3), 1x Hex Caster(Wizard(1))
Hand Weapon (A3)

Beast Riders [3] Q5+ D5+ | 60pts | Fast, Impact(1), Wolf Riders(Fearless)
3x Hand Weapons (A1), 3x Shortbows (18", A1), 3x Heavy Bites (A1, AP(1))

Warriors [3] Q4+ D5+ | 35pts | Shield Wall, Slow
3x Hand Weapons (A1)

Shooters [3] Q4+ D5+ | 40pts | Slow
3x Hand Weapons (A1), 3x Rifles (18", A1, AP(1))

2x Weapon Team [1] Q4+ D5+ | 40pts | Slow, Tough(3)
Crew (A2), Mortar (24", A1, Blast(3), Indirect)

After priming I also managed to apply the basic color for the bases.

Firestorm Class Frigates (BFG)

The first ships for the two fleets are finished.

Squadron of 3 Firestorm Class Frigates

Squadron of 3 Firestorm Class Frigates

I started to make some blast markers. I printed the marker on paper, glued them to some cardboard. I also glued protective film on the front side to protect the printing.

  Frigates with blast markers

The next ships are the Imperial Navy cruisers, which already have there base color and painted prows. Contrast paints work realy well on the ships. I used Warp Lightning for the imperial ones and Flesh Tearers Red for the chaos.

New year, new models

It was pretty quiet around the tabletop hobby in the last few months of 2020. I planed to start with Man o' War, but has some problems with the proxy ships, so I'll put it off until later this year.

40k is still in pause mode, because I still wait for the fist chaos codex release, so still "more" time for some projects beside that. I build and started priming the Orc Trukk for Gorkamorka, but I didn't get any more than that.

But I'm happy that I made some progress with BFG, for which I have got my hands on some printed remastered rules and also enough ships for the start of two fleets.

Imperial Navy fleet consisting of a Lunar Class Cruiser, a Dictator Class Cruiser, a Overlord Class Battlecruiser and a escort squadron with 3 Firestorm Class Frigates.

Chaos fleet consisting of a Slaughter Class Cruiser, a Devestation Class Cruiser, a Styx Class Heavy Cruiser and a escort squadron with 3 Idolator Class Raiders.

Both fleets are around 750 points, so the perfect combination for some test games. I have also primed both fleets and started so paint the imperial ships, but more from that hopeful in the not so far future.

From outer space (Starships/BFG)

Haven't build and painted much from 40k miniatures in the last time, so updates for the Chaos/Death Guard will come in some next posts.

But I have started to paint some starships.
They are all 3d printed and mainly for BFG, but I wanted to use the Full Thrust rules, because the are free and include rules for designing own ships.

Painted chaos fleet:
Grandcruiser, heavy cruiser with fighter squadrons and strike cruiser with boarding ships.

Painted Models:
Chaos grandcruiser, chaos heavy cruiser, Black Templars strike cruiser, chaos strike cruiser and boarding ships.

All ships with a lot unpainted ships from different fleets:
Chaos, Imperial, Space Marines and Mechanicus.

Plague Marines

The seven Plague Marines from the start box are now build and based. The backpacks are missing on the picture, because I will paint them seperate. If I have enough time, they will get primed at the weekend.
Now I can set up four squads each 5 man strong (2 with plasma guns and 2 with blight launcher).

The call of the Lord of Decay

As mentioned in the last post, I have also some Death guard models on the tabel (with some fancy tablecloth 😀).

Seven Plague Marines are partially painted, 6 easy to build marines are fully build and seven more marines from the start box are going to come (one is sneaking in the downer left corner).

I also have found the missing Plaguebearers from which I strip the color, so that they can get the same look like there brothers and I can complete a 30 man squad.

Ongoing Projects

At the moment I have many projects in the making. Some are close the be finished and some are barely started. I hope a few will find a successful end in the not so far future.

Chaos Knights (3 models, close to end)
The Chaos Knight is now full painted (also with mounted head).
The main body, weapons and bases of the Wardogs are also finished, the shoulder pads and armour plates still need some paint.
All decals are still missing, but I have finished them in digital form, so I only need to print them somehow.

Plaguebearers (25 models, started paintig)
For the reinforcement of my chaos armys I started a 30 model strong Plaguebearers squad (6 still missing) with a Spoilpox Scrivener. The Plaguebearers are the 3. edition tin models.
I also plan to add a Nurgle Herold later for some more boosting.

Khorne Berzerker (12 models, built and primed)
Another reinforcement for chaos are a Squad of 10 Khorne Berzerker with a Khorne Lord and a Khorne Dark Apostle. The Lord is a lightly converted AoS model and the Apostle is mainly built from the new and old Chaos Marine kit.

This is all very chaos and 40k heavy, there a also some other projects for which I have no photos or aren't very advanced:
  • Warcry
  • Black Templars
  • Deathwing
  • Death Guard
  • Frostgrave

Chaos Knights #2 and Black Templars #4

The Chaos Knight is ready build and painted with the exception of the head and the heraldic shield, which are also painted but I wait with the assembly, till I have finished all heraldic.
For this I have bought some decal paper, which hopefully arrives in the next days, so that I can print some custom decals.
The knight also got a Icarus autocannon beside the two gatling guns.

Besides the knight I also started to build some more Black Templar from some leftover Space Marines.
Next week the Faith and Fury campaign book will get released, so I hope they will get some good rules like the chapters of the first founding.

Chaos Knight (and a lost battle)

The last battle of the powerful warmaster Abaddon against the unworthy Ultramarines was shockingly not that great for the warmaster.
The lose of the initiativ, slow moving so that the first close combat was in the 4th battle round and a bad combat result from Abaddon himself (he only killed one Infiltrator. :O ) resulted in a defeat.

The normal Chaos Marines are not that great in the shooting phase, so I decided to reinforce the army with some heavy firepower of a Chaos Knight.
I build him with 2 gatling guns in a red and white color scheme.
Still wip, but already looking decent for me.

Warcry Iron Golem warband ready for battle!

The Iron Golem warband is completly painted, I finished the last 3 models at the weekend.
The color scheme is very similar to the original from GW.

Before I took a picture of only the finished 5 models, but forgot to post them.

To make a little progress with the next models is started to paint the skin of the Untamed Beasts.

Possessed and Warcry

Hi, no sign of life till over a month, because of other stuff. But I have painted and build a little now and then.

First I have finished my older Possessed and even played a game with them.
I like the speed, invulnerable save and the 2LP from them, they work great with a Master of Possession and the special detachment.

The second is I have bought the Warcry starter box and have build the two warbands completely, started to build the terrain and even started with the painting of the first model (the Dominar from the Iron Golems).

Abaddon #2

Abaddon got some more colors, but is still wip.
The sword is just blue and I'm not really happy with the fire from the torch. This will be some more work till it looking good.

Abaddon #1

I have bought the new Abaddon model, wich is really amazing.
In his first game (only primed in black), he had a tough start as he lost all but one wounds. With these one wound left he killed 3 characters and nearly 10 Primaris Marines in close combat. Great!
So now he its time for some colors and I started the painting with grey drybrushing, black inking and a few details in gun metal.

Word Bearers Dark Apostle with Dark Disciples

After the rule changes for the Dark Apostle I need 2 Dark Disciples for him to make him more effective with his prayers. The models are an older chaos psyker from FW and one chaos cultist with other arms.

Chaos "Lord"/Sorcerer #3 - Finished!

The Chaos Lord Sorcerer is finished.
There are some spots that are not so perfect, but I hadn't a lot of time for painting. Altogehter I'm happy with the result.
Some pictures as impression.
